Utilization of Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP)

            Carbon Footprint Reduction:

            Lower Energy Consumption:

           toxic fumes from asphalt

are inhaled by over half a million workers every year. This includes road pavers, concrete workers, and roofing professionals. Asphalt is a petroleum product that can cause headaches, fatigue, and skin rashes; it is also toxic to soft tissues in the throat, nose, and eyes.

Some studies show that it only takes breathing in a very small amount of hot asphalt fumes to set off breathing problems. And for those who have asthma, bronchitis, or early stages of COPD, breathing in the fumes of hot asphalt can trigger a respiratory emergency. When it comes to the long-term health effects of hot asphalt, it appears the fumes may be a contributing factor in skin cancer and lung cancer.

So, you must consider both the acute symptoms of breathing in hot asphalt fumes, such as nose, lung, and eye irritation, along with the chronic and long-term conditions these fumes can cause. Don't take a chance with your health by working with hot repair asphalt to patch potholes. Again, OSHA has released the following statements about bitumen fumes in the workplace or anywhere hot asphalt is being handled:

In particular, the known and potential health effects are serious and a large number of workers are potentially exposed, especially considering high industry turnover rates..."

Hot asphalt that is used for road paving and fixing potholes in parking lots and driveways is a strong adhesive. The black or dark brown substance is made from crude oil and is sometimes referred to as road tar. However, it is not tar at all. Tar and pitch are byproducts of coal, but they are physically and chemically different from asphalt.

In addition to the respiratory hazards associated with asphalt, there are other major concerns that must be considered before you decide to use hot asphalt to fix potholes or repair other asphalt surfaces. There is a definite risk of fire and/or explosion when hot asphalt products are used without professional oversight.

Hot asphalt must be protected from any source of possible ignition because it has an extremely low flashpoint. Any spark of electricity, static from clothing, open flames, or even a lit cigarette can cause a pot of hot asphalt to catch fire. The working area must be tightly controlled and all possible sources of ignition must be recognized and eliminated.

Unfortunately, hot asphalt burns are common and they are also difficult to treat because the likelihood of infection is greater with these types of burn injuries. When anyone makes accidental skin contact with hot asphalt, the first problem is the "immediate and effective cooling of the asphalt on the tissue followed by subsequent gradual removal of the cooled asphalt."

However, the removal of hot asphalt that is trying to adhere to the skin must be done by a medical professional. Since hot asphalt is heated up to 280–400°F for paving, you can expect second- and third-degree burns if the hot material gets on the skin. This is because the affected area is under the influence of both a heat burn and a caustic burn.

Nothing is worse than driving down a road riddled with potholes. Not only are they an annoyance, but they can also be quite dangerous. The dreaded pothole is something that has plagued drivers ever since the construction of the first paved road. Estimates indicate that there are over

Due to the potential hazard potholes pose, you want to know what they are, what causes them, how to minimize their effect on your vehicle, and whether or not your insurance provider protects against pothole damage.

What Is a Pothole, and How Are They Formed?

A pothole is essentially any dip or deviation in a paved road's smooth surface. Potholes form when groundwater seeps underneath the pavement. When the water freezes underneath, it will expand, causing the pavement to swell, bend, and subsequently crack. Then, when the ice fully melts, gaps become present underneath the paved surface. The pavement weakens further as the process repeats.

To make matters worse, every time a car drives over the now weakened surface, the weight of the vehicle continues to break down the pavement even further. At this point, pieces of the roadway may become dislodged and displaced completely. Once that happens, you officially have a pothole. But the process does not end there. A newly formed pothole can refill with water, freeze, and continue to break more asphalt, creating an even larger crater that poses an even greater risk.

Because potholes primarily form from freezing water, they generally manifest during the winter. However, it is not until the snow completely recedes and the ice thaws entirely that potholes become noticeable. That is why freshly formed potholes are most likely to emerge during springtime — a good reason for drivers to be particularly cautious in the spring.

However, the damage could be much worse in other cases. Repeated pothole exposure can damage your wheels and tires to the point where they are unusable. A pothole can also easily puncture your tire, leaving you stranded if you do not have a spare. And to make matters even worse, potholes can also pop multiple tires at once.

When driving over a pothole, your steering and suspension can also be heavily damaged, which could cause severe handling issues that put your safety at risk. Not to mention, it will cause rapid tire wear. And in some cases, pothole damage can be severe enough to damage your engine or transmission, which could cause your vehicle to fail completely.

What makes potholes so dangerous is they could be a few centimeters deep to a foot-tall gorge. Even scarier, it is virtually impossible to distinguish which potholes are dangerous or not while driving. Hitting potholes are high speeds is what causes the most amount of damage. That is why we recommend drivers to scan the roadways ahead of them while they are driving. Once you spot a pothole, you should make an effort to avoid it by driving around.

However, if you are on a crowded roadway with other vehicles around, that option may not be available. If that is the case, and you have no other choice than to go over the pothole, then we recommend slowing down before you reach the hole. And right before your tire reaches the pothole, release the brakes. Following this method ensures your car suspension is not compressed, and your wheels do not lock up after hitting the pothole. Hopefully, you will roll right through without any damage.

Fortunately, most insurance agencies cover pothole damage, warranted that you have collision coverage. Collision coverage is an optional insurance policy that covers damage to a vehicle from a collision with objects, such as a lamppost, pothole, or railing. However, it does not cover general wear and tear from unfavorable road conditions.

Collision coverage generally includes a deductible, where the higher the deductible, the lower the premium. Your insurance provider will reimburse you for repair costs, minus your deductible.

Likewise, a driver who hits a pedestrian or another vehicle due to a pothole encounter is covered by liability insurance. In general, pothole damage is relatively minor. If the damage to your car is less than your deductible, it may be unnecessary to file a claim with your insurance provider.

And if a road or parking lot is already in need of repair, it will be more likely to incur substantial damage in the future.

Potholes cost your city and constituents tens of thousands of dollars every year especially when using the old, expensive way to repair them!

The actual material costs in fixing a pothole is only 20% of the entire pothole.

The remaining 80% is in labor and transportation. It cost $1,500 just to get a crew out to the site. Think of all the time and energy wasted to gas up the machines, maintain the equipment, assuring the asphalt mix stays hot, cleaning the potholes, putting the materials down, and hoping it doesn’t come out after the next rain. Oh, and the weather has to be perfect for this method to be applied!
