Asphalt Repair Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much do I need?

Each 50 pound bag covers up to 5 feet, depending on the depth of the hole.

  • Do I need to compact the patch?

Generally no. The passing cars will do the work for you; just make sure you use enough of the mix so it is just above the road surface to allow setting. However, if you wish to compact, this will only improve the quality of your patch and make it more even. The more compaction, the better the results.

  • When can the road be re-opened for traffic?

Immediately! The pothole is ready for traffic immediately after patching.

  • Is this workable under any climate?

Yes! Potholes can be fixed even while it’s raining or snowing. Pouring the cold asphalt mix into a water filled pothole simply displaces the liquids and patches the hole. Our product is currently being used to fill potholes in Siberia & Russia were temperatures reach under -30C.

  • How much coverage do we get out of RoadSoup Bags?

    • For 50 lb. bags, it will cover 5 sq. ft. at 1" depth, or 2 Sq. Ft. at 2" depth
    • For 35lb bags, it will cover 3 sq. ft. at 1" depth
  • What is the Minimum depth we can use the material in?

    • For 50lb (0.5" Minus gradation), minimum we recommend is 1" depth
    •  For 35lb (3/8" minus or Fine Sidewalk material), minimum we recommend is 0.5" depth
  • Does RoadSoup need any additional material other than what's in the bag?

No, Our material out of the bag will be sufficient in fixing the repair area without any other material. I.E. Water, Sand, Tact Coat, Primer, Sealer on Top, Etc.

If using Concrete/Sidewalk Material and the customer would like a better color, you can spread cement powder over the top to closely match aesthetically.

  • Does your material work in water?

Yes, all of our RoadSoup products are hydrophobic and work directly in water/rain. You can put RoadSoup in a pothole full of water without blowing or removing the water, and with efficient compaction the material will hold.

  • The Bags seem hard/dense - are they already expired?

RoadSoup is unlike traditional cold patch material. Our mix typically will not pour out of the bag like emulsion material, but "easy out of the bag, easy out of the hole". RoadSoup is a closed mix, and as the material is Polymer based, you can use your heel and apply pressure while twisting to break the material up. We stand by a product that will not require you to ever have to repair the area again.

  • How long until the material cures?

Our material is ready for traffic immediately after compaction. As the material is polymer based, it is non-sticky, and the aggregates will not be kicked up by car tires or leave the pothole, yet will continually be compacted downwards. For the repair to be fully cured, it takes about 2-3 months from the top down.

  • What do I need to compact the product?

It is key to know that the more compaction you have, the better our material will activate. At a minimum, using your feet / heel or a hand tamp is sufficient if in an area that there is a lot of car traffic (the traffic will do the compaction for you). In areas with minimal traffic, we would recommend using a jumping jack / rammer as the downward compaction is great for our material.

  • What applications can I use RoadSoup for?

RoadSoup should be viewed as HMA. In any application where HMA could complete a repair, we are confident RoadSoup can do the same with effective results. Potholes, Trenching, Utility Cuts, Manholes, Paving Low Traffic Roads (bulk), and more! RoadSoup for Concrete/Sidewalk can be done the same as Quikrete, or any repair that could use Asphalt but have a concrete color.

  • What is the difference between RoadSoup and Competitor Cold Mix?

RoadSoup is Polymer based vs. Emulsion / Cutback Oil cold mix making the material non-sticky, and long lasting.

     - Chemistry in our binder actually will adhere and reattach to the oxidized bitumen surrounding the pothole or repair area, restoring the driving surface, rather than just being a hard patch in a pothole binding to nothing

     - RoadSoup is a closed mix to lower air voids vs. single sized aggregate cold mix

     - RoadSoup is hydrophobic and works directly in water

     - RoadSoup can be used to pave roads, long term trenching repairs

  • How Long will RoadSoup last in a pothole?

All timetables are circumstantial due to not knowing the edges, depth, how it is compacted, etc. But when done the correct way, the material will last 3-5 years minimum.

  • Does RoadSoup Asphalt Repair work on Concrete as well?

YES! RoadSoup can work on all repair areas, and will bond directly to concrete with no other additives or materials.

  • Where Should I store RoadSoup, can it be stored outside?

RoadSoup bags can be stored indoors or outdoors

  • What is RoadSoup made of?

RoadSoup consists of 2.5% proprietary polymer binder and 97.5% Recycled Asphalt grindings/aggregates. The product is completely environmentally friendly and uses no emulsion oils. For more information, check out our Safety Data Sheet.

  • Can RoadSoup be used in a Hot Box Patching Truck?

Yes! As RoadSoup is polymer based and non-sticky, it can be used directly in the Hot Box Patching trucks just the same as Hot Mix Asphalt, but you will not need to clean the truck afterwards with oils/solvents as the material will come out of the box clean leaving no mess behind.
